10 Years Of Mcfly
Here's a really long post about my favourite band, how they changed
my life, inspired me in every way and allowed me to forget all my
troubles.
I'm going to start from the beginning, July 16th 2004. Mcfly were supporting Busted on tour. This was my first concert, the first time I saw mcfly, I was 9 years old. They were four teenage boys, Tom was turning 19 the next day, Harry and Danny were both 18 and Dougie was 16. Until the split; Busted were my favourite band, luckily mcfly were there to take me on their journey over the rainbow of peace, love, joy, magical ponies and sweet music.
I have so much to thank Mcfly for, they gave me some of my bestest friends, some of the greatest memories, the greatest soundtracks to summer. They truly became a huge part in my life in 2011, the exam period. I'm not an easy learner, I can't digest information very quickly or well, as I'm dyslexic. I was afraid of my GCSE's, I didn't want to do them. One of my first exam's that summer was RS, before I even got to the exam hall I started to panic, I was crying my eyes out and finding it hard to breathe. I was having a panic attack, it was my first experience of one and not being about to control it was the scariest thing. I somehow managed to calm down with help and sat the exam in a separate room. When I went home, I sat and listened to mcfly on my own until I fell asleep, I couldn't even think about revising for my next exam. The next morning I was getting worked up again, my mum caught onto some song lyrics while we were listening to a mcfly CD, "When you're down and lost, and you need a helping hand, when you're down and lost along the way, oh just tell yourself, ah I'll be OK" she said 'this is going to be your song, we're going to listen to it everyday' It was true, I'll Be OK was relevant to everything I was feeling! The lyrics meant so much. So everyday we blasted that song out of the car on the way to school. I didn't have another panic attack, I sailed through my exams achieving the grades I needed to stay on at school. I failed that RS exam, but after what I went through I wasn't complaining. I got an A in art, which is probably my proudest achievement, it's also funny because my final piece was a painting of mcfly through the years. Oh and also got 2 distinctions in IT which is equivalent to two A's, throughout my whole life I never got A's, I would have never dreamed to get any. I'm thankful of mcfly because without them I wouldn't have gotten through those exams, I wouldn't be at college doing what I love - photography
Mcfly got me into music, I found out how to appreciate bands and music. I looked into what bands inspired them, they honestly looked up to the best. The first thing they made me do was dig up my brothers old Blink 182 albums, they just so happen to be one of my favourite bands now. Mcfly introduced me to so many new bands, I've loved nearly all of their support acts on tour, especially Saving Aimee and Go:Audio (both sadly split) in 2009 Saving Aimee just so happened to support Go:Audio, after meeting them all, Sean from SA tells me he has brothers in another band who are my age. I end up checking out this band, and going to see them the following February at The Borderline, London -the tiniest venue ever- the band was ROOM 94. Now almost 4 years on, I'm a massive supporter, I've seen the band as many times as mcfly. I've seen them progress from that tiny London venue to touring around the UK at theaters supporting some of the best British bands. I start to wonder if I would have found ROOM 94 without them. Dougie is my biggest inspiration, he's over come so much, from joining the band as a teenager and having to grow up in a kinda limelight. Along with my new love for music, I got a glittery yellow bass guitar for my 14th Birthday, because Dougie had one and he just inspired me to play. I got lessons and started a band or several bands that all fizzled out.
My life pretty much changed completely when my granddad passed away from a stroke when I was , everything was different. My dads anger became an issue and money and everything seemed to just go wrong, it got worse growing up, now I'm almost 19 and me and my mum want to just run away from him. My dad has practically destroyed my life. He made us move half an hour away from my friends and school, from a perfect family home. The high school years were disrupted because I had to travel at rush hour back to a place I didn't want to be, I can never find motivation to do anything being here. My school work took a big hit as I was unhappy, which add to the fact dad only thinks of himself, every month there'd be a new TV, a new car, a hot tub, completely irrelevant things which we don't need. He buys it all for himself. I started to be depressed and cry over the littlest things, i think it's one of the reasons my mum did anything to make sure I saw mcfly. She knew they gave me the most happiness. Recently things are worse than ever between my family, my dad flipped, smashing my laptop up with all my memories on, I was crying with anger. He said he smashed it to hurt mums feelings but instead hurt mine, he didn't care. Then went on to admit he only cared for the house and himself. He doesn't care for me, my brothers, mum. That broke my heart into pieces. My whole family told him to apologize to me, but he wouldn't. This happened at the start of my summer holidays, I'm still waiting on an apology, not that any apology will be good enough from him. I'm now even traveling further away to do my second year at college, he didn't support me in any decision making last year, when I thought I did a great shoot in photography he would turn his nose up, me and my brothers get zero support from our dad. He only has negative things to say. I never thought someone who should care and cherish you can be completely the opposite and make you feel awful. Days when I felt I couldn't leave my room because I made myself sick with stress and sadness, I would have mcfly on repeat, I'd play my guitar and watch mcfly videos for hours. I look at photograghs of mcfly and think 'let me get through college and I can be taking photos of my favourite band just like Tom Leishman or Dean Sherwood in a couple of years' I remind myself of my dream, and reassure myself I'll make it out and get away from the unhappiness my dad brings me.
I've seen mcfly 17 times and traveled over 2,900 miles to see them. To Birmingham, Lincoln, Norwich & London multiple times. I still have Newmarket Races and Royal Albert Hall left, after already seeing them 3 times this year and going to Danny's DJ set and Harry & Danny's football match. I've spent endless hours queuing and waiting for them. Majority of the time not even to end up meeting them, but I still do it, every year. For their Up Close And This Time It's Personal tour, me and my friends camped outside our closest venue to get front row tickets for the show 3 months later. That was an experience I will never forget, we froze our asses off but had such a laugh at the same time. There was endless drunks stumbling past asking what we were queuing for, it got to the point where we made up we were seeing someone ridiculous like Elton John. ahaha.
I finally met them after 7 years at my local radio station, it was the best day of my life.
